Getting Around the Island of Phuket

Phuket, which is roughly pronounced as "pu-ged", is the largest island in Thailand. Its main centre is Phuket Town, which holds most of the population in the region. It offers affordable accommodations but it is far from the coastal area. The prime access to the islands is Chalong Bay. It is home to the most well-known yacht anchorage in the country.

Since the island is big, mechanical transport is required to get around conveniently. The most common means of exploration are taxis and tuk-tuks. On the other hand, most hotels provide their own shuttle service or car and taxi hire. You can also hire motorbikes and jeeps, with shops all over Phuket and in primary beaches. If you are travelling with your baby, you can even hire essential equipment from a separate company that offers baby-related rentals.

To get around the town, you can ride a "songthaew". This is a converted pick-up truck that serves as a bus. Local-bus services are provided for town to beach travels. The buses wait at the Ranong Road market at 30-minute intervals until 6PM. If you cannot get a ride beyond this time, you can hire a taxi.

Motorbike taxis in Phuket are called "motosai". They are really cheap and can get you around town. There are also scooter and motorcycle rentals if you want to go driving on your own. A crash helmet and a license are required for this kind of service. Furthermore, you can try island hopping, wherein your transportation means is a longtail boat. These services are usually manned by the beach locals.
