What You Should Know About Thai Cinema

If you are a movie buff who is planning a visit to Thailand, here are a few facts that might be useful for your additional knowledge.

Film was first introduced into the country when King Chulalongkorn went to Switzerland and the visit was documented by Francois-Henri Lavancy-Clarke. The recording was brought back to Thailand, and since then, the Royal family and the Thais started to develop an interest in the movie industry.

From the beginnings of Thai film making up to the present, there have been several directors who have been recognised in international film festivals, such as the Cannes, due to the controversial and unique storyline delivery of the filmmakers. Some of the motion pictures that were awarded are 'Ploy' in 2008, 'Dek hor' in 2006, and 'Blissfully Yours' in 2002.

The Kingdom has not only been acclaimed worldwide because of the films that were made by local directors, but also because of the Hollywood films that chose Thailand as the venue of their production. Some of the most famous movies that were shot here were 'The Beach' in 2000 at Ko Phi Phi Leh, 'Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason' in 2004 at Bangkok and Phuket, and Sylvester Stallone's comeback in 'Rambo' in 2007.

Nowadays, you can watch an assortment of flicks in Thailand's cinemas. There are Western films that are sometimes dubbed in Thai, some Asian movies, and of course, Thai motion pictures that are shown with subtitles. As a tourist in Thailand, it will be a culturally interesting experience to view a product of Thai Cinema. If you are planning to migrate to the Kingdom, you can easily pick up on the language if you frequently allow yourself to enjoy local films.
